Large groups of students can sometimes seem overwhelming. We often worry that we do not give enough individual attention to students. Sometimes we have students who dominate too much, and as a result, we have other students who shy away into the background and get overlooked. One way to deal with large classes is to divide the class up into smaller groups. That way you are able to monitor several groups rather than a large number of individuals. You can assign team leaders that could be rotated as groups and pairs get mixed up (to promote variety).
You could also have students compare answers to written tasks with partners. This once again allows you to monitor more easily. As long as you are confident that they are comparing answers successfully, you can look at each pair/ groups’ work rather than each individual’s.
An added bonus to these techniques is that they also promote student to student interaction. |
