Learning students’ names can be a stressful thing for some teachers. It is such an important aspect when it comes to teaching because it is an extremely useful classroom management tool. It also helps us to build rapport with our students and make them feel that they are not just another number in the room. These are some techniques that I have found useful when it comes to remembering student’s names:
1. Write each student’s name on the board in the order that they are seated; or
2. Follow the class roster, having students initially sit in the order that their names appear.
Using either of these techniques allows you to call on a student by first referring back to the board or your master list. Only move students around once you are comfortable with their names; otherwise, you will lose track of who/ where they are.
3. Use your students’ names as much as possible- when you call on them, when you praise them, when you correct them, when you give classroom instructions. The more you use their names, the more likely you will be able to remember them! |
