Qualifications for teaching overseas
I am very interested in obtaining a TESL, etc. certifications in order to teach English in countries like China, Thailand, Nepal, and Tibet. Can anyone please help me with the appropriate qualifications? I am 49, a paramedic for the past 15 years, and have an associates degree. Will not having a bachelor degree limit my employment opportunities?
Thank You!!

Transworld CTESOL
Hello Mark: Well of course I would have to recommend the Certificate in TESOL at Transworld Schools (we partner in ESLFocus.com). You do not need a degree for the countries you are considering - China, Nepal, Tibet, and Thailand - and although a TESOL certificate is desirable, some schools will still hire without one. China has the most to offer in terms of number of schools, locations, and pay; Thailand also has a good ESL teaching market, pay is lower but then so are the hours; Nepal and Tibet are quite difficult if not impossible to find paid employment and most teachers volunteer their time. You might also consider Vietnam, it has a good teaching industry and will accept certified teachers without a 4 year degree.

Hi Ceri, Thank you for the information. Having an associates opposed to a bachelor degree has been a concern for me. When I looked through websites posting employment opportunities it appeared they all were looking for that bachelors degree along with the TESOL certification. This is something I have been wanting to do for a while and will began to look further into realizing this goal and obtaining the proper teaching certifications. I have family is California and can make a trip out there to check out Transworld's program in person. Thanks again for the information.

Taiwan: Associates + CTESOL = OK!
You should have a bachelor's degree to legally work in China as it will designate you a "foreign expert" and therefore eligible for a work/residence permit. Nevertheless, there are other options but less legitimate.
In Taiwan, I've seen programs allowing someone to teach there with an Associate's Degree + Certificate in TESOL so it's definitely possible.
I've heard people in other places being told "You look like you speak English, do you want to teach it?" This, completely irrespective of their qualifications.
You're options for teaching university would be limited though.
