What should ESL teachers at private language schools expect from their employers in terms of professional development?
I am a TESOL trained ESL instructor in a private language school in the US, and I want to enhance my teaching skills without necessarily investing in a Master's degree.
Can anyone share any experiences around what I should be expecting from my employer in terms of job/skill development? I assume they should be helping me become a stronger teacher... but what is realistic?
Some ideas I had:
- Ask for more observed teaching time -- get them to watch me teach and critique what's going on.
- Read some academic texts on ESL specifically, teaching English grammar, etc.
- Attend workshops and/or conferences about ESL teaching. Something like the CATESOL conference? Do people find these events helpful?
Any ideas or thoughts welcome!
